Strengthening the Practice, Not Escaping Into It

A reflection on living your spiritual work, not retreating into it.
We don’t engage in spiritual practice to run away from life—we do it so we can meet life more fully.
So we can stay when things get loud, tender, or overwhelming.
So we can listen when we’re triggered.
So we can breathe when we forget who we are.

So many seekers begin the path thinking spiritual practice is a sanctuary they must retreat into when life becomes too much. And in the beginning, maybe it is. Maybe the cushion, the journal, the quiet breath are the only safe spaces we know. But something miraculous happens over time:
We stop using our practice as an escape—and instead, we start using it as equipment.
Equipment for living.
For presence.
For parenting, caregiving, working, loving, confronting, forgiving, resting.
For being human.
This is the turning point in any inner journey:
When you stop waiting for the right conditions, and you realize that your practice was never meant to be fragile.
It’s meant to be anchored.
That meditation?
You can take it into traffic.
That breathwork?
It belongs in the middle of a hard conversation.
That sense of peace you’ve touched?
You can call it back in aisle 7 of the grocery store, or at midnight when you can't sleep.
You’re not meant to be a “spiritual person” who escapes life.
You’re meant to be a human who is spiritually equipped to move through it—with grace, discernment, and truth.
So the next time you reach for your spiritual tools, pause and ask:
Am I escaping, or am I strengthening?
And if you’re strengthening… carry it with you.
Into the kitchen.
Into the office.
Into the silence.
Into the noise.
Into the world.
Because that’s what this is all for.
If this reflection stirred something in you…
If you're feeling the nudge to live your spiritual practice more fully—not just on the cushion, but in the chaos—you're not alone.
