Spiritual Practice in Real Life: How to Stay Grounded When Life Gets Busy

There comes a moment on every healing journey where things begin to move—not just inside, but all around us. Maybe it’s the end of the school year. Maybe it's family coming into town, summer plans stacking up, a house full of grandchildren, or a thousand things vying for your attention. And suddenly, the beautiful clarity you had during your quiet morning meditations or journaling time begins to feel far away.
But what if this was the moment your spiritual practice was made for?
What if these "busy times" aren’t interruptions to your healing but the training ground where your inner work becomes real, lived, embodied?
This post is inspired by a beautiful soul who, after twelve weeks of dedicated inner work, found herself swept into a week of caregiving, errands, and long days filled with other people’s needs. She messaged me feeling like she had "fallen off track." But what she didn’t realize at the time was that this was the work: integrating her growth into the messiness of real life. And she did it with such grace.
Here’s what we uncovered together:

1. Your Spiritual Life Is Not Separate From Your Daily Life
Washing dishes, driving to pick up grandchildren, planning meals, fielding texts and emails—these can all become sacred moments if you bring yourself fully into them. The trick isn’t to have more quiet time, it’s to find your quiet center within time.
2. Build Micro-Practices Into Your Day
You don’t always need a full hour of solitude to connect to yourself. Try this:
One deep breath before each transition.
A whispered affirmation while brushing your teeth.
Three things you’re grateful for before stepping out of bed.
A 30-second hand-to-heart pause before opening your inbox.
These moments build presence. They are tiny prayers offered to your becoming.
3. Anchor Practices to Your Environment
Is there a chair by the window that feels like peace? A patch of light on the floor that reminds you to pause? A sound—wind chimes, a pond trickling, birds outside—that draws you home to your breath?
Let these physical anchors bring you back to your inner world.
4. Let Your Feelings Speak
When you notice frustration or guilt rising because you "aren't doing enough inner work," pause and ask: What part of me is afraid right now? What does it need?
Even the guilt is an invitation. Let it be your teacher.
5. Trust the Spiral of Growth
Growth doesn’t move in a straight line. It spirals. We revisit old lessons with new eyes. We pause. We integrate. We deepen.
You didn’t fall off the path. You just entered the phase where the path becomes your life.
And that, beloved, is when the work becomes real.
You don’t need to do more. You simply need to be with what is.

Bring your breath into the moment. Touch your heart. Remember the truth that lives in your body. Let your life be the ceremony.
You are not behind. You are becoming.
